Commissions

I like to work on projects that support people’s engagement with the arts and I have documented a number of workshops designed to achieve this aim. An overview of the most recent workshops is provided below with links to relevant images and information made publicly available by the participating organisations.

If you have a workshop that you would like me to photograph or a project for which you think I might be suitable, please get in touch via the online form on the Contact page.

RBSA and Sense

Sense is an organisation that supports people with complex disabilities, including those who are deaf blind, in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Sense Arts pioneers the development and delivery of arts activities, workshops and events specially tailored towards individuals with sensory impairments. (Sense website, 2018.)

I was invited to photograph people taking part in art workshops at Sense Birmingham, as part of an ongoing collaborative project between Sense and the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists. These photographs were included in an exhibition of work by Sense participants and RBSA artists at the RBSA Gallery in 2019.

RBSA and Focus

Focus Birmingham is a specialist charity providing expert advice, support and information to anyone in the Birmingham area affected by sign loss or other disabilities. Focus Birmingham’s Art Club is a club for people living with signt loss with a passion for art in Birmingham and the surrounding areas. Club members are able to create, enjoy art and visit galleries. (Focus website, 2018.)

I was invited to photograph members of the Art Club participating in a handling session delivered by a member of staff from the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists. The participants explored a selection of raw materials, tools and finished work provided by an RBSA sculptor and an RBSA textile artist, primarily through their sense of touch.

Speak Back: Speaking Back to the Media

I was invited to photograph an improvisional theatre workshop exploring the lived experiences of the members of Implicated Theatre, the Women’s Cultural Forum and Birmingham Asylum and Refugee Association.

The workshop formed part of a series of workshops and performances by Implicated Theatre and this series formed part of their residency with the Serpentine Galleries’ Edgware Road Project.

“What country, friends, is this?”
